The Magic of Transposition
Transposition, or transposing, is when a musician takes a tune that's in one key and moves it to a different key. Another usage of transposition in trad is to move a melody down or up an octave in order to create a different sound texture without changing the melody/key.
This sounds easy, but it isn't! In this class, we'll learn the basics of transposition from a music theory standpoint, as well as some tips/tricks/shortcuts that will make it easier to do on the fly. Then we'll practice taking short sections of melody from common tunes and transposing them. We'll also discuss when it's appropriate to use transposition.
Who's this for: All melody instruments, although some tips/tricks will be geared towards fiddles.
